Embracing the new year......

I had another topic in mind for this post, but I can't seem to find the right words this morning, so this may be a bit of a ramble......life is very busy at the moment, I am not complaining, in fact I quite like the fact I am too busy to watch much TV or sit comfort eating, I am just dreading that day, when the motor stops running, and I feel too worn out to do all that need doing! The elderly relative is still in hospital, and unfortunately will not be coming home, so there is a lot to sort out, both literally and emotionally, we has a family have difficult decisions to make! More on that another time, perhaps. I am not sure whether I mentioned 'my resolutions' on here, I lose track a little with Twitter and Facebook etc...but apart from the usual losing weight (which I need to do!) and looking after myself (which I don't do enough!) I decided to a) try to keep on top of my ironing, what I mean is iron little and often each week instead of putting the job off and letting it build up into a huge pile that you don't want to look at, let alone tackle! That job is a must this weekend to keep that resolution in tact! and b) was to bake one morning a week, which I managed last week but not this, so again that is todays job..... This is what I am hoping to make

Both recipe's are from last Sunday's You mag....... I have the ingredients so that is a start....and love lemons!

Also I have added some new stock to the website this week, please pop over and take a look....

To be Thankful for?

Last week I caught a snippet of the tv programme Loose Women, not a programme I watch regular, but it happened to be on and they were talking about David Cameron's New Year speech and the fact that 2012 is going to be a tough year. Sally Lyndsay made a comment, saying that we need to thankful for and appreciate the smaller things of life and that way we will stay positive. Carol McGiffen then said she felt thankful after landing at Heathrow and there was no queue at passport control.

During my thoughful daily dog walks, I dwelled on this conversation and after mulling it over, I found I agreed with her, Yes, we should be thankful for the simple pleasures of life and the small achievements we make!

This is what I am Thankful for this week..........

The weather has been so mild and very Spring like, which has mean't I have been able to hang the washing out most days, and although still damp afterwards, it has mean't not having to waste money using the tumble dryer!
This one is also weather related. The mild weather also means we haven't had to use our oil heating as much as normal, and also we still have a half load of logs left, whereas this time last year, we were desperately awaiting a new load!
and lastly I am Thankful we have not got carried away this Christmas and over spent!

2012 is going to be tough, which means it is going to be a year of being Thankful for what we do have and the small simple pleasures of life..........

Candle love....

If you like me are a candle lover, and have often wondered what to do with the candle leftovers that never burn through fully, then this useful tip from Sarah Moore's lovely book Homemade Gifts Vintage Style, will come in handy!

The instructions are very simple to follow, I just melted down my old leftover candles with one new plain white one, in an old saucepan, removed the wick from the new plain white candle, once melted, held it in place over the chosen vessel, pour in melted candle wax and wait to set, thats it.....new candle to light!
So simple and no more wasted candle leftovers..........

Bit of a catch up.........

life has been a bit hectic recently, the 'elderly relative' is still in hospital, 6 weeks on, and it seems to be one step forward, two steps back, I don't think he will out before Christmas.........unfortunately. Anyway we are trying to make the best of things and stay positive!

To get us in the festive spirit, we visited Lincoln Christmas Market at the weekend, very busy, but some lovely food stands and unusual stalls.........

Autumn days, You mag, and discounts!

Well today is one of those lovely sunny, Autumn days with clear skies and a cheerfulness in the air!

This weekends issue of You mag, had a great article written by Mimi Spencer, noting the comeback of tea cosies on the teapot, afternoon tea, baking...... fuddy-duddy living is back on the style radar, as she puts it!

Also included, aswell as the great recipes and of course Liz Jones column, was this advertisement for a great looking book 'Homemade Gifts vintage Style'..........

George Hann prints and more.........

We had a rather stressful week last week, when an elderly relative had a fall and had to be taken to hospital, everything stood still for a while, after the initial shock and emotional roller coaster, hospital visits and family to stay we are trying to find some normality this week. Luckily he is making a bit of a recovery, but unfortunately things will not be as they once were. On a brighter note, I took a little break on Saturday afternoon, and what better way to relax than to spend time scouring junk shops. I found the top George Hann print, which I originally bought to resell. That was, until my husband saw it! The two bottom prints already hang in our bathroom and so now does a third. I don't really know much about the artist, but I love his paintings, the vibrant colours, the loose style and of course a lot them are set in Paris.

We inherited this bush when we moved into our current home, and very nearly threw it out. I am so glad we let it stay, as a couple of days ago it really looked so pretty with its multicoloured Autumn leaves. It is also very prickly! It is hard to believe we are approaching the middle of November, the garden, although there are quite clear signs of Autumn, still looks pretty good. We still have some colour with pretty roses, fuschia, and sedum, but I am dreading that first sharp frost, when nothing will survive. Plus some days I am still able to wear a tshirt and sandals............

At last! a little place to call my own......

For a long while now I have wanted to be able to get the sewing machine out, and leave it out, be able to leave what I started and go back when I had the time, and now finally..........

I have that space, a little desk and bookshelf in our conservatory, yes it will be cold in winter, but there will be plenty of light and nice view of the garden in summer!Don't get me wrong I am not a great machinist, in fact it is quite a while since I have had the machine out, but since watching Kirsty enjoy herself so much, with freehand embroidery I have wanted to have ago, and so with the help of this book by Poppy Treffry...

I highly reccommend this book for anyone wanting to have ago, everything is so easy to follow........ all I need now is the time to practice!!

Grow and Cook Recipes.....

It is such a joy when the new edition of Country Living magazine lands on the doormat! One of the features I am really enjoying is Grow and Cook, which follows Tessa Webb and her friends on their allotments and also includes some lovely simple recipes using their homegrown produce.........

The butternut squash recipe looks very tasty!

Just thought I would show you some lovely items which I added to the website recently, I especially like the pretty watercolour! I couldn't decide whether to keep it or not, but one of the perks, is being able to borrow pieces for sometimes a short or longer period of time, hence the painting is now on the wall of our bedroom, awaiting new ownership..........

A couple of weeks ago a kind lady offered me some bags of vintage clothes, bags and hats, these are not really my field ( once upon a time, a long while ago now! I used to enjoy dressing up in pretty vintage dresses, but I was also a lot slimmer then too! ) Today is the day I have begun sorting the bags......

Yesterday we headed off to Sandringham, for what may become an annual trip, apple picking. After loading up the car with lovely apples, apple juice and cider! We headed to Hunstanton ( unfortunately due the deaths of several dogs,of an unknown cause after visiting Sandringham woods, we didn't want to risk it) beach, the beach here is beautiful.........

We then headed into town, for a fish and chip lunch and an ice cream............

I hope everyone has had a lovely Bank Holiday weekend! not too much rain I hope, Saturday was our worst day, but although it has been dry, it has turned a lot cooler, very Autumnal....... the long weekend has given me the chance to catch up on some chores and also I have been able to add New Stock to the Country Style Living website, here is a selection of new items...........

The Veg Patch...........

It's that time of year..........we start to reap the rewards from the little veg patch within our garden, this is mainly my husbands side of the garden, he plants and weeds and plans, sometimes it has not always worked out, but this year not only is the produce really good, but the plot looks well planned and maintained........

Tomatoes and cucumbers in the greenhouse. Kidney beans, beetroot, leeks, carrots plus more in the garden.

Lots of raspberries

if we can pick them before the birds!

And of course we need to use the produce, one cookbook I picked up from the local library and have found very useful is this one by Annie Bell

Recipes are easy to follow and do not need lots of ingredients............

I hope to list some new products on the Country Style Living website shortly.

Did any of you watch The Night Watch last night, bit racy wasn't it! but I did enjoy looking at the war time interiors and thought the actors did a good job. Not quite the love story I was expecting though.........

The Night Watch......

Just a quick reminder, although I haven't had chance to watch a lot of TV over the last couple of months, the odd film here and there and The Shadow Line, which scared me half to death, but I still watched it! I noticed there is a one off drama The Night Watch on BBC 2 at 9pm which looks especially good, it stars the same leading lady as The South Riding, Anna Maxwell Martin and is a love story set in war time Britain. Enjoy

Time flies when you are having fun..........

so the saying goes. It is hard to believe we are approaching the middle of July already! and the nights will soon be closing in........... It is only a couple of weeks since I last posted, but it seems an age ago, there just never seems to be enough time, and now we have the long school holidays approaching, things will only get worse, as most of my time will no longer be my own, although I do look forward to those unstructured slower paced days of the holidays. My son is growing up fast and so it will be nice to spend some quality time together......

Books, books and more books...........

Regular readers of my blog will know how I love the library, and have often given a glimpse of the books I collect from there, here on my blog. Nothing would give me greater pleasure than having a room, with wall to wall shelves full of books to glance through and sometimes read, a comfy cosy easy chair and a warm coal fire or logburner burning bright, one of those rooms you sometimes see in films! Yes dream on............ Since having the website, I have now started adding a varied selection of books to it, some old and some not so old, often these are chosen just for their colourful attractive covers..

This book is a new addition....... I love this book, I am not really sure why, but it has a lovely cute pocket at the back with a cartoon map tucked in it aswell as the original street map of Phoenix, Arizona. There is also a great inscription inside the front cover

As you can see the book dates to the 1940's, and looks to have been either sent from Arizona to Wales or vice versa............

Creating Vintage Style..............

On a recent trip to the library (love the Library!!), I managed to come away with this lovely book by Lucinda Ganderton, not only does it include some great pictures, but it has ideas for projects too......

I also borrowed these books too.....

Love Charleston Farmhouse in Firle, East Sussex. This book tells the story of the renovation of the house and gardens on the death of the artist Duncan Grant......

Loved the TV series, I liked the simple approach and look forward to trying out some recipes.........

There is only one problem about borrowing great books from the Library, they all have to be returned!! But it is a great way to review before you buy......

A Quick Catch Up!.....

I hope all you Mums out there, had a lovely Mother's Day yesterday!.........I was treated to lovely daffs, great homemade card, Milk Tray and some lovely homegrown plants for the garden..........

As I mentioned in my last post, we made some changes to the garden at the end of last year, but unfortunately due to the harsh winter, we look to have lost more plants than normal this year.

One book I recently borrowed from the library is

Carol Kleins 'Life in a Cottage Garden'

It is a lovely book.........giving monthly and daily tips as the seasons change throughout the year. A must for any keen gardener! I didn't manage to watch the TV series ( I can't remember why) hopefully it may repeat at some point.

I love cottage gardens.........the lovely garden was the reason we bought our first house, but as with life the garden needs to change to suit the owners needs (lawns for children to play etc)

When we first moved in beyond the arch was planted aswell..........Happy Memories

Spring Fever!

.....well it certainly has been here the last couple of days. With some lovely sunny days ( spring always seems to take me by surprise, all of sudden everything seems to need doing at once ) the chance came to open the windows and let some fresh air indoors. ( I love the winter time cosied up by the log fire, but after a while of using the burner, it leaves a musty smell ) There is a definte change in the air, the nights are getting longer, the mornings are getting lighter and the days are becoming brighter!. The lawn has had it's first cut of the year and Wow does it make a differnece to the look of the garden! I have also been able to wash the loose covers of the suite, aswell as do some general Spring cleaning......

Here is a lovely article from the March Homes and Antiques magazine, giving some eco friendly cleaning tips!

I am hoping the 'Spring ' weather lasts a little longer, and we get a chance to get out in the garden for a clear up. We made some changes to the garden, at the end of last year, so we are looking forward to seeing the results.....

Yes, one my christmas presents this year, was the lovely KHMH book, I like many others have watched both series on TV and so looked forward to receiving the book............

As with any good cookbook, there were some crafts that although lovely, I knew I would never attempt, but some appealed because they were easy to follow and affordable to do......

My first craft to try was fabric decoupage............ I loved it!

My first attempt....a little tatty around the rims, but a lot fresher look...

Add a painted lampbase ............

Needless to say several other lampshades have a recent revamp too!

A couple of other crafts I hope to try, are the simple envelope cushion and soap making.....

So if you are looking for a new craft to try, I recommend KHMH for some simple affordable ideas.....

Embracing the New Year........a little!

I hope you have all enjoyed lovely Christmasses and great New Years. For me January is a time of reflection, reflecting on the year gone by and planning for the year ahead. I don't neccesarily set New Year resolutions, but try to set goals and aims that I would like to achieve throughout the year........I don't always manage it! This year my main aim is to LOSE WEIGHT, it is something I have needed to do for a long while, ignored for a long while! and now realise that I need to take action.. Today I have been sorting through my wardobe and am dismayed at the ammount of clothes that no longer fit, but also the fact, that I did wear them once, it seems such a long time ago. I have not thrown any out, apart from the really worn items, but have left them there as an incentive. One day I hope to wear them again. I am not setting out on a diet as such, but a lifestyle change, cutting out crisps, chocolate, too much bread, sugary drinks, cakes and biscuits etc etc and of course partaking in more exercise. My husband assures me if I keep to the eating plan and gradually build up the exercise, the weight should drop off, I hope he is right!!
I have also made a list of all the jobs that need doing around the house, started a big clearout and reorganised several rooms, with still a couple to do, this always freaks my husband out, as I can not do everything on my own, but he has promised if I lose the weight he will help with the bigger jobs.

Over the Christmas break I realised I have now been blogging a whole year, I would like to thank all my followers and readers for their kind comments and support over that time, and hope 2011 is as pleasurable as 2010 has been.

Making....beautiful crafts in your home

..whilst out shopping recently, I came across this magazine on the rack, now it's quite expensive, I must admit, but after flicking through, I thought I would need to have a closer look.....now I am one of those people who loves tinkering and making, but is not really very good at it, the things I attempt to make turn out OK, but just OK, they don't have that professional look...Anyway as we are now approaching Christmas head on, I am trying to be ultra organised this year, so I have the time to make a wreath, gift tags and decorate my own wrap paper, well thats the aim!? Anyway back to Making.....it just turns out to have ideas for making a wreath, decorating wrap paper plus much more...

I especially love the letters and will be having a go at those, and the blackboards look fun too....There is also a guide to quilt making and an interview with Kaffe Fassett...

Issue 3 is out on the 9th December and is being advertised as the Vintage edition, interesting!!

With the snow falling, what better way to pass the time.....

Lovely Stamford......

During the half term holiday, we enjoyed a day out in lovely Stamford, not to visit anywhere in particular, but just really because we had been told what a great market the town holds on a Friday. And yes it does have a great market, the day we visited, the fortnightly Farmers Market was on, we came away with lovely breads, homemade jams and chutney aswell as homemade fudge and a great bunch of flowers (bliss).....Aswell as the market there are a good range of shops, aswell as a great trail of charity shops ( always a winner) We enjoyed a lovely lunch in The Tobie Norris pub

Whilst there I came across this picture in a little shop opposite the Tobie Norris, I fell in love with it straight away, and luckily still had some birthday money to spend, so indulged in a little treat...

I Still really love it! Very Charleston, don't you think......

Apple Picking at Sandringham......

On a glorious sunny Sunday morning we headed over to Sandringham, for a spot of apple picking, it didn't take long, but was well worth the drive. And as my son said, as he was picking off the trees "It was well worth coming for this, wasn't it" it just goes to show that not everything in a childs life has to be money and technology driven. We now have plenty of stored apples to use over the coming months..........

Apple trees are so pretty, I love their craggy branches....

There is plenty to do and see at Sandringham, aswell as the house gardens and museum, which we didn't visit this time, as we had taken our dog , there are woodland walks, a gift shop, restaurant, an outdoor picnic area and plenty of room for children to enjoy bike rides and ball games. We were also lucky to find the Farmers Market there. We then drove up the coast to Hunstanton for lunch and a walk on the beach. All in all a lovely day out, which we hope to repeat next year.......

Once in a while, whilst looking through Saturdays 'Daily Mail Weekend' mag, I realise what a great week it is for someone like me, who loves home interior and cookery programmes, aswell as a good drama or film. And this is certainly a good week!! Here is my pick of the week ahead, although I am sure there are still some hidden gems too....

Today SAT I have already watched 'Whale Rider' and am looking forward to X Factor this evening. Wagner singing Kings of Leon?!

SUNDAY X Factor and then Downton Abbey at 9pm on ITV I don't want this series to end! I look forward to this programme in the same way I used too with Pride and Prejudice, the one with Colin Firth......

MONDAY Jamie at 5.30 on Channel 4 sometimes have to plus 1
The Little House 9pm on ITV

TUESDAY Jamie plus the long awaited new series of Kirsties Homemade Home 8pm Channel4 can't wait.....

WED Jamie again....then Nigel Slaters Simple Suppers, I love the simplicity of his meals

Finally I've Got It!

Yes, finally I was able to collect this long awaited read from the local library. I first read a review of this book, on one of the blogs I follow and promptly ordered it at the library, I was in a queue, and was finally able to collect the book about a week ago......

The book blurp says - Phoebe Swift always dreamt of opening her own vintage dress shop. She imagined every detail, from the Vivienne Westwood skirts hanging next to satin gowns, to sequinned prom dresses adorning the walls.
At the launch of Village Vintage, Phoebe feels the tingle of excitement as customers snap up the fairytale dresses. Her dream has come true, but a secret from her past is casting a shadow over the venture.
I am about a third the way through the book now and just getting to that can't put it down stage. I would highly recommend this book to all you vintage lovers out there.

Help needed please.....

Whilst out on my travels bargain hunting, I came across this picture, at the time I was looking for a frame to show a piece of artwork my son had done,which I was very impressed with, so I bought the picture with that in my mind, once home I started to feel differently about the picture looking at the trees and the movement they showed and how realistic the picture was. I thought I may offer the picture for sale on the website ,but once I started looking at it again, I started to wonder if the picture was in fact a watercolour, I am still not completely sure, but I didn't want to open the frame up and spoil the back which still has it's original seal. So this is where your help is needed please, does anyone know of an artist by the name of Tatton Winter, the picture is called Returning from Market, as you will see it is a lovely picture in a pretty original frame. I have had a quick look through Google and know he was born in Lancashire, but also lived down south and died in 1928. Any other information would be much appreciated......

Escape to......

Well, we had a little emergency at the weekend! You may remember me writing about our new pet hamster, Stig, well after a disturbed night, with the dog unsettled and barking , we awoke to find Stig had gone. Gone where? I asked. Just gone, he's Escaped! was the reply. He had been cleaned out the evening before, but looking in at the empty cage, you wouldn't know it. it looked like it had been ransacked, the roof of his house was strewn across the cage, All the food had gone too! We looked high and low, even taking the skirting boards off in the bathroom, where there is small hole behind the sink. I got the vac out to see if that would bring him out, we asked Ruby the dog, as we now realised this is what had disturbed her in the night. There was no sight of him.....until, all had gone quiet, the thought of not seeing Stig again, had sunk in a little.....I heard a rustling in the kitchen and turned around to see Stig, fall out the side of the cupboard which houses our fridge. 'I've found him' I called 'Ring your Dad'. (I can't touch him you see, I stated this when we bought him, It makes me shiver just thinking about it!) No reply Mum. The next thing we know, he is on the very top of the cupboard which houses our fridge, looking over the edge!! Son is now in a state of panic and so am I, the phone then rings, it's not Dad, but a customer. 'It's for you Mum', what to do? Stig is on top of the highest cupboard in the house, and there's the phone, Son is now crying, screaming Noooooo Stig!! I get rid of the phone call. Get a chair and his plastic ball and hope.......Stig climbs quietly in to his ball. Panic over.....Dad finally arrives home to place him in his cage. I can't help but admire the Stig, his cheeks full of food, venturing out on his adventure......We all kinda love him more now........Who didn't shut the cage properly? The doors are now tied up, I wouldn't want to go through that again!

Summer Wine Country.......

Last weekend we managed spend a day away at one of our favourite places to visit, the lovely Yorkshire town of Holmfirth, one of the settings for the tv programme Last of the Summer Wine, we have had the chance to visit a few times now, as my sister in law now lives there. We always love the cosmopolitan feel the place has, aswell as lots of charity shops and gift shops, for some vintage and country style shopping. We spent a few hours in the town aswell as spending time with our new niece Martha and her brother Angus. In the past we have managed to spend a few days in the area and would reccommend it as a lovely place for a short break.......

The summer hols are now over and my son has just finished his first week at his new secondary school, I think he enjoyed it? I didn't realise it would be so stressful.....for me. LOL!

Yes, like so many others, I always seem to be playing catch up, and now the children are on their Summer break, well, there never seems to be a spare moment somehow. Life has been busy, no sooner do you start the week, the next thing you know it is Friday again! Anyhow I have managed to load new products onto the Country Style Living website, please take a look if you have a spare moment, they include

Other than restocking the website, we managed another visit to London, this time visiting the Tate Modern and then catching a game at the Emirates, between Arsenal and AC Milan, this was the first visit to a home game for my husband (a life long Arsenal supporter) and also my son, who is of course also an Arsenal supporter, so it was quite special, walking with the fans to the match etc, instead of just tuning in on the TV. Even I got into the swing of things!

Aswell as this visit we have enjoyed the usual trips out with friends, walks on the beach etc, with plenty more to follow, another 3 weeks of the holidays left still!

I am also proud to say my husband and I have become Aunt and Uncle again to lovely, Martha, a beautiful baby girl, born yesterday, weighing 8lb 6 oz, a welcome sister for Angus. My son was especially pleased with a new baby girl for a cousin. Congratulations to all the family!

'Five Pleasures of Summer'

Well, we are midway through July now, so 'Summer' is in full swing, and we have had some lovely proper summer days, lets hope they return soon....through the lovely hot days, it got me thinking, what do us Brits most enjoy about our summertime. Well here is my top 5 fav pleasures...

1) Picking fresh flowers from the garden, especially Sweet Peas with their sweetly smelling scent, which makes them ideal for bringing indoors. They will be growing in abundance now, which means pretty flowers available every day!

2) Enjoying an Ice Cream! whether it be your fav lolly or favourite flavour of ice cream (homemade strawberry) in a cornet, or an ice cream sundae with fresh fruit, this is certainly a pleasure on a hot summer's day....

3) Relaxing with a good read, either that new magazine, that must read novel or just the daily newspaper, there is nothing more relaxing than sat indoors or outdoors enjoying a good read...

4) Outdoor Living and Picnics, whether it be a long lunch or dinner in the evening sun or enjoying a glass of wine, it is really lovely to let the outdoors in so to speak. Even just eating your lunchtime sandwich on a park bench brings rewards!

And last but not least at Number 5) The Garden the biggest pleasure of Summer is the garden in full bloom, all those plants coming to life and showing off, surprising every year, making that colourful back drop to all the above, but aswell as flowers there is also the vegetable garden, producing the food we eat, Tomatoes, Courgettes, Cucumbers, Peppers, Lettuce to name but a few of the things we grow here, without the garden the outdoor living would not be possible, the fresh flowers could not be picked, the fresh food could not be served at the table and so it goes on...

Busy Week!

Well, it seems a while since I last posted, and a lot has happened in the meantime. Thankyou for all you lovely comments regarding Stig the Hamster, he has settled in well, although we have found, he has a nasty nip!

Special request 'Top Gear' cake please Mum......

My son celebrated his 11th Birthday, which meant a friends tea party and a family tea party to organise. All went well..... He then visited the National Space Centre near Leicester, with his school on the actual day of his birthday, which he described as Awesome! And then for his Birthday present from us, we all went as a family on a sightseeing weekend to London....

Visiting the Dinosaurs section of the Natural History Museum, which he loved!

We then caught the Tube to Green Park, walking through St James Park to Buckingham Palace, where the Guard very kindly did a routine, which really impressed my son, we then carried on down the Mall, heading for Trafalgar Square, and from there to Westminster, passing Downing Street along the way. We walked over Westminster Bridge and headed for our trip on this...

Next day (Fathers Day) was a boys trip to Arsenal Football Club, for a trip around the ground, changing rooms etc

We had then wanted to visit the Tate Modern, but short of time after spending so long at Arsenal, and with some of the Tube lines not running, we decided to spend some time on the Southbank, before catching our train home....

All in all a lovely weekend, which we plan to repeat again soon.

I seem to have been playing catch up ever since, and what with the hot weather, World Cup ( say no more about that), Wimbledon, I am still playing catch up, anyhow I have managed to upload some New Products onto the Country Style Living website

New addition to the family....

My son has been asking and asking for one of these, he then saved his pocket money to buy one, and he promised to look after it too? I am pleased to welcome 'Stig' the hamster ( yes, my son loves Top Gear with Jezza and Co) to our family.

Now I don't know a lot about hamsters, but my son has found a book on how to keep him or her, so hope fully that will help. He seems a very sociable chap and likes a lot of attention, loves his tunnels and wheel and is partial to a cardboard inner from the loo roll!

Our dog Ruby has been enjoying the sunshine!

Yes, we have to fight her, to sit on this chair when the sun is shining!

The garden is really coming into it's own now, especially after all the rain.....

Spring to Early Summer already!

Well, I hope you have all enjoyed the lovely weather we have had and although it has turned cooler again now, it is still dry and bright. It never ceases to amaze me how quickly everything changes in the garden at this time of year. All of a sudden plants that seemed so small the last time you looked, are now about to bloom or in full bloom! My flower border is just getting to that lovely 'established' stage, where some plants are filling out there space nicely and some need keeping in check, so as not to take over completely. I am loving the Alliums this year, and have made 'note to self' to purchase more for next year.

I always love this combination too..

I like my flower border's to have that non uniform, non conformist feel to them. These Blue Cornflowers are really pretty and so easy to grow, they self seed everywhere, but they do tend to spread out and flop over as they grow larger. Once they have flowered all you need to do is cut them right back and wait for the new growth and new flowers. So easy and so pretty!

It's hard to believe we are coming to the end of May already, somehow Spring has flown by and Early Summer is already here...

I hope you are all enjoying the Bank Holiday weekend and the weather is not too bad... No rain here yet! We are praying for rain as the water butts are empty and the ground is rock hard!

The wonders of 'You' magazine..

I hope you all have had a lovely weekend. Our weekend has been spent watching our son play in a local footie tournament, and yesterday a trip to the Newark Autojumble, which mainly sells anything from old cars and motorbikes to spareparts and related items. Luckily the weather was OK for both, which makes all the difference. Unfortunately my sons team did not win the footie tournament, but as the saying goes it's the taking part that counts! The trip to the autojumble proved fruitless too, but my son loved looking at the classic cars parked up from VW campers to American Chevvys to Lotus and Porsches. Did not take a camera, so missed a real photo opportunity..next time maybe.

One of my pleasures of a weekend, is a relaxing morning with the You magazine from the Mail on Sunday, I always start from back to front, because the home section and cookery section are there.

I love the mix of modern and vintage! I have always dreamt of having a walk in pantry, one day maybe!

It's Tuesday already!

Yes it's Tuesday already, a short week this week.I hope everyone has had a lovely long weekend, the weather here was better than forecast, no real rain to speak of, only small showers, but still windy and cool, just aswell really as most of the weekend was spent watching the son play in a local footie tournament. Yesterday was gardening day, and we managed to get the Sweet Pea's in and my husband got caught up with all the veg planting etc. It's that time of year now, when you only have to blink and the lawn needs cutting again, our flower border seems to have grown over night!

I don't seem to have been watching much TV lately, apart from my favourites, which I have wrote about previously, so I have spent my evenings making a button lampshade, as seen in the Thrifty Chic book, as I didn't have any small buttons, mine is an alternative version.

It's not perfect, but that makes it quite appealing, doesn't it!

..the holidays are now over and my son is back at school, we have had a lovely time, enjoying the weather and days out with family and friends, but I sigh a sigh of relief, because as lovely as the holidays are, I am now realising all the things I haven't managed to keep up with, one of which is blogging. It seems a while now since I blogged, so this may be a longer one than normal, I apologize in advance..

Last week I recieved a lovely surprise from Viv at Pooh's Abode, as the winner of her lovely giveaway, she sent this wonderful book Stitch Dictionary, which is just perfect, as I do like to have a go at a tapestry now and again. Thankyou Viv.

I have also been busy ordering books from the library.....

They are all lovely books, but I recommend Flea Market Style. The only down side of borrowing books from the library, is they have to go back, and I have been known to hold on to them longer than I should.

Firstly' Thankyou ' to you all, for your kind Easter wishes ..I hope everyone has had a lovely Easter weekend, and enjoyed lots of chocolate, and had great fun with family and friends. We have had a relaxing weekend, we got caught up on all the gardening, enjoyed time with our nephew Angus, who we don't see very often, and Yes have eaten lots of chocolate, whilst watching a good film on TV!

On a sadder note, I recently collected this book from the library, The Wonderful Weekend Book, I had a long wait as the book is so popular, but the very next day, I read that the author Elspeth Thompson had passed away. My thoughts are with her husband and young daughter.

The book is full of great ideas of how to enjoy the simple pleasures of life, it is well worth a read....

..I have been keeping myself busy reading these Country home books.... which I have borrowed from the library....Now in our village, the lady at the library knows you by name, is really helpful and you get a lovely personal service. You don't get the largest selection of books, but I make up for that by ordering any I fancy a look at, over the internet for collection at a later date. When you then collect your books, it gives you a similar feeling, to receiving a parcel, or collecting a parcel, that same excitement and anticipation..... I recently visited our local town's library, which has now gone self service, it totally confused me, and I had to be shown how to use everything....I think I much prefer the friendly personal service.....

Anyhow these are the books I am talking about....

at last Spring has sprung! the weather has been kind, although still a little cool at times. I don't think I can remember, the small bulbs such as Crocus and Snowdrops look so lovely, they have really made an impact this year. It's so good to be able to open the windows and doors, and let the outside in, as it were. I am looking forward now to all that Spring brings.....

Has Spring finally arrived?

Dare I say it.....has Spring finally arrived? We have had 3 pleasant days here and everything is drying out nicely. The snowdrops are looking lovely this year, really making a good show, in an otherwise rather desolate looking garden. I can't wait to start cutting back and tidying, ready for Spring in it's full glory.

As I mentioned previously, I have been busy making Marmalade, now this is a first for me. I don't actually eat it myself, but my husband does. So when I was reading one of my regular magazines, and came across this recipe, it looked fairly straight forward and I thought I would have a go. This is how it went.....

Recipe from Easy Living Magazine

Wash and Scrub Wax from Seville Oranges

Simmer oranges in large saucpan, with 2 litres of water for approx 2 hours

They should then look like this

When cool, you then need to take the pips out and cut the skin into shreds

You then put the pips etc into some muslin cloth ( I used a tea towel ) tied together and attached to the saucepan lid, and simmer with remaining juices and juice from a large lemon and any other juices from plates, for approx 10 mins

Remove cloth and add shredded orange skin, until soft and then slowly add sugar, and simmer until setting point is found.

I placed a saucer in the freezer to test for the setting point

When cool, transfer to sterilised jars.

Not bad for a first attempt, and my husband seems pleased!

Where does the time go!

It's been a while since I last posted, time seems to fly by! What with school hols, miserable weather and doing all jobs that go with family life, there aren't enough hours in the day sometimes. I am so looking forward to Spring , and the lighter nights.

....well had a really relaxing break over Christmas, the decorations are now down, and we are starting a New Year. Hope 2010 will be a good year for everyone. We have enjoyed the snow, made it feel very festive. Lots of walks with the dog and sledging in the field.

I have been busy this weekend, It has taken a while to get into the festive spirit, but I couldn't put it off any longer. Inspired by Kirstie, last week, my son and I, had a go at making salt dough decorations. This is how we got on....

This is my son kneading the dough, just like pastry!

The ingredients we used are half salt to half water to whole flour, mixing together until you get a firm dough.

Rolling out the dough!

We didn't have any fancy cutters, we made the shapes by hand

Ready to go in the microwave for about 4 or 5 mins

Not a bad first effort! and with no cutters.

We also put our tree and decorations up!

Just the baking to do now, and the wrapping and the cards...........

My name is Maria and I run a website called Country Style Living. I love everything about the country way of life, from log fires in winter to sweet peas throughout summer. Walks with the dog, making strawberry jam, homebaked cakes, a wonderful bright colourful garden and above all else an individual eclectic country/vintage home and garden. The website is a chance to bring all that together, to enjoy browsing the markets and auctions, car boot sales and charity shops, looking for those special pieces that make such a home.

I love all things bright and beautiful, colourful pots and jugs, prints and fabrics.
I especially love Clarice Cliff ceramics and anything Art Deco.
Visiting Charleston Farmhouse, the Bloomsbury groups country retreat, was heaven!

I hope to visit Sissinghurst in Kent and Sarah Raven's garden in the near future.

Colour runs riot in my home and garden, through the soft furnishings, decoration and colourful prints and other objects.

These places and people have all inspired me and still do.
